The mantra that Marcus Shulgasser adopted is that “a well-written book that’s been pre-owned is better for the planet.”

Situated at 4919 E Main St, Jeffersonville, Shulgasser has been selling used books for about a year and a half out of his store, the Book Mark, with doors open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A large factor that drives his business is his ownership of pre – ISBN (International Standard Book Number)books. This quality makes them difficult to sell online.

His collection primarily features a lot of art, astrology and vintage books. As an avid book collector himself, Shulgasser optimistically started this business with the notion that it would be interesting for people who like collecting books to come and stop by.

“They should buy them for gifts as well,” noted Shulgasser.

A good portion of these books come from his personal collection over a number of years. However, some also come from shipments of rare books, as well as those he finds at state and yard sales.

However, Shulgasser is interested in the idea of shipping books out to those who buy them.

“A book is a very personal thing,” said Shulgasser. “You pick your own story that speaks to you the most.”

“Books have always been a major part of my life – it’s a way to share something of myself.”
